Though the dv6-3225dx uses a last-generation Intel CPU, it still delivered performance similar to with what we've seen from systems using the latest incarnations, such as the HP Pavilion dv6-6013cl. In our Handbrake video encoding test, the dv6-3225dx's time of 3 minutes and 16 seconds was just slightly behind the dv6-6013cl's (3 minutes and 13 seconds), though other laptops are still faster (the Sony finished it in 3 minutes and 9 seconds, the Acer Aspire AS5742-6475 needed 3 minutes and 2 seconds, Hp Pavilion ZT3000 battery, and the Lenovo G560-0679AKU (3.5 stars, $599 list) was fastest of the group at an even 3 minutes). Whereas the dv6-3225dx needed 6 minutes and 2 seconds to complete our Photoshop CS5 trial applying 12 filters and effects, the dv6-6013cl could do it in only 5 minutes and 48 seconds; the fastest here was, again, the Lenovo (at 5 minutes and 27 seconds).

Because of its integrated Intel HD Graphics, the dv6-3225dx is not well suited for gaming. It managed only 4.6 frames per second (fps) in Crysis at a resolution of 1,024 by 768 with medium details enabled; in Lost Planet 2, Hp EX942AA battery,Hp Pavilion ZT3000 battery, Hp 337607-001 battery, Hp 337607-003 battery at similar settings, it lumbered by with frame rates of only 6.4 fps. A Printer That Demands Patience
So, besides the price, what does the Officejet 100 give up? One of the most obvious tradeoffs is print speed, with an output rate of just five black-and-white text pages per minute. The wait for photos or graphics gets even longer: The printer only averages about three and a half pages per minute with graphics and three pages per minute for photos printed on regular paper. On the highest-quality photo setting, the Officejet 100 slows to over one minute per page.

That's a really slow output rate, but at least the results are up to snuff. The Officejet 100 offers 600 x 600 rendered dpi (when printing from a computer), with up to 4800 optimized dpi color and 1200 input dpi. The best results with images are, of course, with quality photo paper, but even on regular paper the images were very good and comparable to many desktop inkjet printers.

The cost breakdown is also a tad high. The standard HP 98 black cartridge retails for around $24 and reportedly offers 440 pages. That breaks down to about 5.5 cents per page. The Officejet 100 worked seamlessly when used with a desktop or laptop PC over a USB 2.0 cable (not included), and a Windows 7 PC recognized the printer instantly. PictBridge also worked seamlessly, making it easy to print out photos seconds after shooting them. (The irony here is that it takes longer to print a photo than it does to transfer it to the printer.) A test laptop running Windows Vista also connected to the printer, although this system took some "convincing" to finally print.

The printer's built-in Bluetooth support was useful, although it would have been nice to have Wi-Fi connectivity as an option, too. Many desktop PCs don't have native Bluetooth support, although Bluetooth is clearly an essential feature given the Officejet 100's road-warrior focus.

Mobile device connectivity was more hit-or-miss, but in fairness this issue usually has more to do with the client devices than with the printer itself. Bluetooth allowed for quick connections to smartphones and an Android tablet, yet despite the fact that the devices were synched, some apps still couldn't print successfully. Seamless it was not, so users are advised to get these kinks worked out ahead of time.
